Birches For Andrea 24″ x 12″, oil on panel

Bid on Birches for Andrea until September 30 2017.

Earlier this year, my friend and colleague Andrea Harris passed away from ovarian cancer. For almost ten years, Andrea worked as the Chicago-based Artist-Representative for Gamblin Artists Colors. Andrea’s positive attitude, creative spirit and early morning workout regimen were constant sources of inspiration to the rest of our team.

I first met Andrea in early 2007, as I was ramping up the Artist-Rep Program. I visited her Chicago studio, we spoke for an hour or so, I told her about the program we were starting, and hired her on the spot. Andrea was working on a series of abstracted birch trees at the time, a subject that she would revisit often in her work. Even though she would eventually pursue various subjects throughout her painting, the birch trees always resonated most with me. It is for this reason that I chose to paint a family of birch trees to honor Andrea.

This painting is available for sale, by auction, with 100% of the proceeds going to Andrea’s Hope Foundation, which will enable women with ovarian cancer and their families to benefit from the same kind of compassionate care and support that Andrea and her family received.

I’m starting the auction at $300. The auction will end at the end of September. Please visit my website, and leave your name and bid in the comments section.

Thank you for the support.

Sincerely,
Scott Gellatly

Introducing Andrea’s Hope Foundation https://andreaharris.com/new/?p=1591 https://andreaharris.com/new/?p=1591#respond Fri, 14 Jul 2017 10:30:44 +0000 http://andreaharris.com/new/?p=1591 Andrea passed away April 2, 2017 after a two year battle with ovarian cancer. Her family and friends would like to announce her newly formed “Andrea’s Hope Foundation”, as part of Andrea’s legacy. Your tax-deductible contributions will enable women battling ovarian cancer to find peace and comfort. Andrea’s Hope Foundation will use your contributions to help pay for hospice care, phamaceuticals, and other necessities that insurance might not cover, and to fund research. All funds will be used to either battle ovarian cancer or to ease the last difficult days of those whose battle is ending. We hope their final days may be as peaceful, rich, comfortable, and filled with love as we were able to make Andrea’s with the help of hospice care.

Various therapies such as music, massage, and pet therapy are not available for those without insurance. Even with insurance, most comfort level items are not covered. Things like bereavement counseling, ministerial counseling, nurse’s aides for extended periods of time, and even hospice care for those without the ability to afford hospice itself are but a few of the things “Andrea’s Hope Foundation” will endeavor to help fund for those who are in need.

While Andrea’s paintings have all found permanent homes, much of her work is owned by her family and is available for shows in legitimate venues. Her artwork is available as gicleé prints on canvas and fine art paper. A portion of the sale of her prints will be contributed to her Foundation. Contact her husband, Bart Harris, through andreashope.foundation or by calling Bart at (847) 845-3404.

Message from Bart Harris https://andreaharris.com/new/?p=1549 https://andreaharris.com/new/?p=1549#respond Tue, 18 Apr 2017 16:08:37 +0000 http://andreaharris.com/new/?p=1549 It is with a heavy heart that I mourn my wonderful, beautiful and talented wife Andrea. She passed away after waging a two year battle with ovarian cancer on April second, 2017. She was a warrior and an angel.

Our sons Aaron and Joel, our grandson Dylan, our daughter in law Amy, my sisters and brother, as well as many nephews and nieces and countless friends and fellow artists love and miss her. I will announce the formation of a charity named in Andrea’s honor. “Andrea’s Hope Foundation” in the coming month(s) when it becomes a legal entity.

Andrea’s Hope Foundation will benefit ovarian cancer research, Northwestern Memorial Hospital’s Ovarian Cancer Department and most of all, women who are battling the final stages of ovarian cancer who do not have adequate insurance or resources to help them and their families cope with the last weeks of oc due to inadequate financial resources.

The doctors and nurses in the Gynecologic Cancer Department at the Anne and Robert Lurie Cancer Department of Prentice Women’s Hospital were wonderful as was Palliative Care at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and all those loving caregivers at JourneyCare Hospice.

Those of you who both knew and loved Andrea (to know her was to love her) are encouraged to attend the Celebration Of A Life Well Lived in Andrea’s honor on June 11, 2017 in Lincoln Park. Details will follow.

The following appeared in the Chicago Tribune on April 13, 2017 in the business section:

Andrea Harris, artist with a late-blooming career, Passed Away at 69

Artist Andrea Harris was also an accomplished marathon runner and cyclist.

Chicago Tribune

Andrea Harris was in her early 50s when she acted on a casual suggestion to take a drawing class at the Art Institute of Chicago. She went on to take a class in oil painting, a path that launched her on a late-blooming career as a fine artist.

Harris, who had been a model and a clothing designer, was also an accomplished marathon runner who moved from that to bicycle racing. But her talent and imagination really came out in her art.

“Those paintings just blew me away,” said her husband, photographer Bart Harris, of the first paintings she brought home from class. “That became the passion of her life.”

Harris went on to produce hundreds of paintings, many large-format, in styles that ranged from impressionist scenes from nature to realistic renderings of places and people, including a notable series of 50 paintings she titled “Women of Courage.” Her paintings have been shown in galleries across the U.S. as well as in Europe.

Harris, 69, died of complications from ovarian cancer April 2 in her home in the Roscoe Village neighborhood of Chicago, according to her husband.

She was born Andrea Sommers in Coraopolis, Pa. After finishing high school there, she did some modeling in Pittsburgh and for a time in New York before moving to Chicago when she was 20. She met her future husband when she walked into Harris’ photography studio looking for modeling work. They soon began dating and were married in January 1970.

Harris became interested in running and through her husband connected with an experienced runner, Laurie Rossi, who offered some advice. Planning to be a spectator, Harris accompanied Rossi to a marathon in which Rossi and another friend, Erma Tranter, well-known for her work with Friends of the Parks, planned to participate.

“At the last minute, she decided to register and run with no real marathon training,” Tranter said. “She ran the marathon and finished it in a very respectable time. It shows you her talent and her determination.”

Harris went on to run a number of marathons, including one in Hawaii with Rossi. Through her involvement with running, she became a representative selling athletic shoes and for a time was a part owner and manager of an Evanston store selling running shoes and other athletic gear.

Her interest in sports led her to apply in 1979 to be one of the runners carrying the Olympic torch to the 1980 Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid, N.Y. Gene Deutscher, who represented Texas in the torch relay, said Harris was one of 52 runners chosen to carry the torch from what was then Langley Air Force Base in Virginia to Lake Placid.

“Andrea was a hell of a runner and very adaptive,” said Deutscher, noting that snow and cold weather made the eight-day event more challenging than organizers planned. According to Deutscher, who remained a close friend, Harris made a strong impression on many in the group. “She was just a bright shining light in all of our lives.”

Harris later got involved in bicycle racing, where her determination led to her qualifying to participate in the 1988 U.S. Olympic trials in the sport, according to her husband. She was 40 at the time, competing in Houston against women half her age.

In addition to making art, Harris shared her knowledge of art with others. For a time, she took part in a program to take grammar school children to Lake County forest preserves and parks to learn about nature and the environment and to paint from what they saw.

That love of nature showed up in many of her paintings, according to Rossi. “She felt some kind of a bond and that it should be preserved.”

Harris was a director of the Chicago chapter of the U.S. National Committee for UN Women, working for social, political and economic equality for women and girls around the world.

Tranter said the same determination that carried Harris to success in sports and art was evident in her fight against cancer. “She was determined to live her life and to live it fully.”

In addition to her husband, Harris is survived by sons Aaron and Joel; and a grandson.

Plans are being made for a celebration of her life.

This beautiful tribute does not describe the sheer number of accomplishments my wife achieved in her all too brief life. Nor does it illustrate her compassion or her passionate pursuit of art, making people aware of our beautiful environment through her art and speaking engagements, her running accomplishments, including assembling local female distance runners for two assaults on the women’s 24 hour relay record. Her team ultimately broke an existing record to be listed for years as the world record holders in the Guinness Book of World Records. Andrea was a clothing designer with women’s dresses sold in Marshall Field and Company and Carson Pirie Scott and she was commissioned by Susan Ford to make a custom leather sport coat for her father, the President of the United States. Gerald R. Ford. She was the manager and partner of a very successful running store in the 1980s in Evanston, Il., The Complete Athlete.

Andrea was a true renaissance woman, smart, funny and in the forty seven years we were married, I do not remember her ever speaking ill of anyone. I miss her terribly.

The first quarter of 2017 has been filled with opportunities to exhibit my artwork and to pursue my passion for human rights.

Many of the artists in this group exhibition are U.S. Veterans, Native Americans, and cancer survivors. It is a celebration of women who inspire others and pays homage to Women’s History Month.

In support of my Women of Courage series of paintings, I have launched a Go Fund Me project. The project has become a cultural mosaic that has traveled throughout the United States, and has become a significant public art project. The exhibition has been on view both in part and in its entirety. Venues include Chicago’s Mayor Daley Civic Center (entire collection), university galleries and museums. Very often university venues add an educational component regarding the the strength of women and the influence on society.  Donations are needed to continue the “Women of Courage” story.  Shipping, artwork maintenance and climate control storage are all costs that have made this project a challenge. Your immediate support will ensure that others will have the opportunity to enjoy the exhibit and that the legacy will continue for years to come.  You will have the opportunity to continue the thread of humanity., and I will be forever grateful.

2016: A Great Start https://andreaharris.com/new/?p=1331 https://andreaharris.com/new/?p=1331#respond Fri, 19 Feb 2016 23:27:07 +0000 http://andreaharris.com/new/?p=1331 This year has been filled with exciting exhibitions and opportunities that have offered unique experiences of interfacing my artwork with my other passions: humanitarian and environmental concerns.

I am honored to be involved in a compelling panel discussion: Change Artists – Using the Arts to Leverage Positive Change that will take place at the 2016 United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UN CSW), Thursday, March 17, 2:30 PM, at the Thai Cultural Center, 310 44th Street, Room 2.

Additional panelists include: Breaking Criminal Traditions  (BCT) executive producer/TED speaker Cheryl Jefferson, BCT curator/painter Professor Charles Gniech, Columbia College-Chicago art professor/BCT painter Richard Laurent. The panel will teach participants how to translate the arts into social action, strategies for community engagement, engaging artists, and more based on the BCT model.

Begun in 2013, BCT uses fine art to raise awareness of honor killing, child/forced marriage, female genital mutilation, acid violence, child military conscription, and other criminal traditions that harm millions of females each year yet globally are not considered crimes. “The beauty of fine art helps people access these difficult topics,” says Jefferson, “and that consciousness is the first step toward changing these human rights violations worldwide.”

Under curator Gneich, BCT has exhibited in five major Chicago area venues including Chicago-Kent College of Law, the Beverly Arts Center, The Art Center – Highland Park, North Central College, and the Bridgeport Art Center. Each exhibit features new work and is accompanied by in-depth community and educational outreach including panels, artists workshops, screenings, dance performances, high profile speakers and more. :”The UN CSW allows us to take this work to an international level,” says Gneich.

Running from March 14 to March 24, 2016, the UN Commission on the Status of Women is attended by thousands of policy makers, legal influencers, educators and activists from around the world. Panels are free and open to the public.

About Eco Cool Globe: Rainforests and Ecosystems

The world’s tropical rainforests cover only a small part of the earth’s surface- about 6%, yet they are home to over half the species of plants and animals in the world.

Rainforests are the subject of frequent campaigns calling for their protection, but what role do they play in our lives? There are seven very important everyday foods linked to the rainforests.

1) Coffee is one of nature’s most traded commodities, supporting more than 25 million people globally. Today the best coffee still comes from farms where the beans are grown under the shade of a rainforest canopy.

2) Bananas This tropical fruit is part of a $5 billion global industry. Today more than 15% of all the bananas traded internationally come from Rainforest Alliance Certified™ plantations.

3) Acai is considered the superfood of superfoods, and it is the berries – rich in protein, minerals, anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory elements.

4) Cinnamon is literally the bark of the cinnamomum burmannii tree and is mostly grown by farmers on small remote parcels of land, nestled alongside other native trees. Once harvested, the bark curls naturally as it dries to form the “cinnamon sticks” we find in our grocery stores. Cinnamon’s good pal vanilla also grows naturally within a forest environment.

5) Black Pepper, peppercorn, grows on the flowering vine of the Piperaceae family in tropical regions around the world, especially South Asia and Southeast Asia.

6) Cocoa, like coffee, can be cultivated under the shade of a forest canopy and is found throughout West Africa, Asia and Central and South America.

7) Palm Oil is found in food products, cosmetics, shampoos, soaps and a myriad of products most of us use daily.

This particular “Cool Globe” sculpture was created especially for exhibitions represented by Monteoliveto Gallery.

The twelve-inch diameter globe was also on view in October, 2015 at the House Space Museum Tadini Milan,  Feeding the Planet Energy for Life international exhibition from October 10-24, 2015. The artwork investigated concepts regarding food, nutrition and the environment which brought together 30 artists from international countries and was part of a larger, 6-month exhibition that was a global showcase for 140 countries.
About Cool Globes: Hot Ideas for a Cooler Climate:
Cool Globes: Hot Ideas for a Cooler Planet project & exhibition was conceived in 2006 by Chicago environmentalist Wendy Abrams. Wendy’s tireless energy resulted in the most amazing “global” display of creative ideas to bring awareness and solutions of climate change and our social responsibility.
The original “Cool Globes” were five-feet in diameter and many have traveled and been on view throughout the United States Europe since 2007.
In addition to the original five-foot diameter globes, the twelve- inch versions were created for special indoor exhibitions and international environmental awards. I am honored to have been involved in the original Chicago exhibition and created the Eco-Heroes globe which highlighted individuals that have dedicated their lives to preserving the environment for future generations.
