Napoli
As the crisp air arrives, it is a perfect time to reflect on my fabulous time spent in the warmth of Napoli this past August.
Thanks to Galleria Monteoliveto Nice-Napoli for the invitation to spend time experiencing the glorious sites of Napoli as part of the “ 22 Artists Mad for Naples” project. During this time the selected artists, each staying at independent times for a minimum of two weeks over a one-year period of time, have the opportunity to walk the streets, visit museums and places of interest and absorb the history of the Napoli- Vesuvius/ Pollena Trocchia, Gulf of Napoli areas, to make personal discoveries and experience the “flavor” and the personality of the region.
The city of Napoli intrigued me. I adored the excitement of the city, the marvelous food and the friendliness of the people; all the while with Mt. Vesuvius appearing in the background as a subliminal suggestion.
What to paint? My mind was spinning. The proximity of the sea appeared to beckon me, until I dared to take a day trip to the quiet and lovely island of Procida. This small island, with its storybook painted buildings, is located in the Gulf of Napoli. I decided that I just HAD to create a painting that would capture this colorful and peaceful fishing island.
Upon returning to my studio located in the Galleria Monteoliveto residency/ gallery in Napoli, I began to paint a sketch of Procida.
There were many opportunities to explore Napoli, sample the famous foods and wines and interact with the residents and tourists. However, it wasn’t until I almost completed my painting that I treated myself to a day-log excursion to the island of Capri, famous for the “blue grotto.”
At last my painting of the fascinating island of Procida was completed!
Along with Procida, I fell in love with the region of Pollena Trocchia and the warmth of the people that live there. Upon completion of my painting, my long-time friend Laurie Rossi, who accompanied me on the trip to Naples and was my assistant, tour-guide and chef, traveled with me to Pollena.
I was thrilled to be the guest of honor at the most incredible dinner held at La Vigna Bed & Breakfast. All food and wine served was from the Pollena Trocchia region, and I have never had such an amazing dinner! Thank you to all those involved in organizing this splendid evening and especially to Domenico Di Sapio for arranging my experience at Pollena Trocchia.
To my surprise, a story of the Mad for Naples/ Pollena Trocchia Project appeared in the Naples newspaper magazine insert. Below is an image of what appeared in the magazine, of course in Italian. I am thrilled to be mentioned by name.
I was so inspired by my trek up Mt. Vesuvius, that I decided to capture my emotional response by creating a painting during my final day in Italy.
Ciao, Napoli ♡

Ciao, Napoli ♡
Je me suis sous le grande envie!
Can’t think of a better artist and person to deserve this.
Best wishes to you and yours,
Richard
PS – I’ ll be painting in NOLA next week.
