Celebrating Art (Célébrer Art)
Oct 16th, 2013 by andreaharris
September and October have become pivotal months for showcasing my art and for extending my art experience internationally. For this reason, my current blog will also be written in French to accommodate those who visit my web site from France. I hope that what I have to say will not be “lost in translation.”
The works of Matisse, Cezanne and Picasso have always influenced the creation of my paintings and works on paper. Certainly other artists have also influenced my art including Monet, Gauguin and Turner. In this particular instance, it is truly an honor that my artwork has been selected, simultaneously, as a tribute to both Matisse and Cezanne.
The Artist Riviera Project
I had the unique opportunity this past September to spend a great part of the month in Nice, France in residency as part of the Artist Riviera Project. Eight artists were selected to create a work (painting, sculpture, photography, installation, video art, street art) inspired by the light and colours of the Mediterranean and by the “art de vivre” of the French Riviera, a land of inspiration of great artists from all over the world: Renoir, Bonnard, Matisse, Picasso, Chagall and their successors of the famous Ecole de Nice. As a selected artist, I explored the most magnificent light and atmosphere of the area and visited the places of art and museums. My residency was located on the fabulous Promenade des Anglais, along the Mediterranean.
My “task” was to create a painting during my stay in Nice and leave it with the gallery that sponsored the project, Galleria Monteoliveto. In 2014 an exhibition is planned in Nice that will showcase the artwork from the project. My subject for the project (bear in mind I was in sensory overload) was the town of St. Paul de Vence.
St. Paul is a beautiful medieval fortified village perched on a narrow spur between two deep valleys and dates back to the 11th Century. Marc Chagall is buried at St. Paul de Vence. Adjoining St. Paul de Vence is Vence, and my beloved Matisse devised a plan for a chapel that was built and decorated according to his specifications. The chapel is called the Chapelle de Rosarie de Vence ( Chapel of the Rosary), but it is known as the Matisse Chapel.
Below: Creating the painting in my Nice apartment, without easel. This arrangement worked out very nicely, and I strategically taped oil cloth on the wall to avoid leaving unnecessary paint marks.
The completed painting, below, is oil on linen, 80 x 80 cm (31.5″ x 31.5″). The stretcher was built for me by a fabulous art store in Nice, Maison Franco.

Project Matisse:
My painting, Three Lemons and a Kiss was on exhibition at Galleria Monteoliveto, located in Nice, France. The juried exhibit was part of a city-wide tribute to the 50th anniversary of the Matisse Museum. As described in the Royal Monaco Magazine, “Homage to Matisse is a voyage of form, color and light.” In addition to the gallery exhibition, eight museums in Nice honored Matisse with exhibitions that included artwork from masters artists, and of course, Matisse.
It was thrilling to be in Nice during Project Matisse and to view my own painting at Galleria Monteoliveto. Equally thrilling was the article written about my painting and featured in Royal Monaco Magazine (scroll down the page after clicking on the link).

The Art of Influence: Breaking Criminal Traditions
This stirring and poignant exhibition opened Thursday, October 10th at IIT- Kent College of Law, 565 West Adams Street, Chicago, IL. The exhibition runs through February 6, 2014, so if you missed the opening reception there is still plenty of time to view the artwork.
Featuring some of the country’s most accomplished artists working with noted curator/painter Chuck Gniech, author/TED speaker Cheryl Jefferson, and award winning painter Richard Laurent, Breaking Criminal Traditions: The Exhibit is an exploration of human rights and criminal traditions in an effort to create awareness, starting with the current and future policy influencers found in law schools, seated politicians, and the community at large.
The exhibit is supported by extensive outreach to students and the public including a series of lectures by Cheryl Jefferson, a participant in the 2011, 12, and 13 UN Commissions on the Status of Women; a panel discussion with artists and with founders of several cultural activist groups; dialogues with international experts, legal authorities, and more. Work is also underway to secure the presence of several politicians and diplomats at the opening in an effort to support the change that can only come from within the affected cultures including here in the United States.
I am honored to be one of the thirteen featured artists. My paintings were selected from my well-known series, Portraits: Beyond Boundaries and represent two women that have survived the challenges of their culture.

The projet de l’artiste Riviera:
