Cool Globes Travel to Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Jun 9th, 2011 by andreaharris
It is an honor to have my Cool Globe, Eco Heroes, included in the traveling public art exhibition located in Westergasfabriek and surrounding area in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. There are a total of over fifty five-foot diameter globes– some are from the first exhibition that originated during Cool Globes: Hot Ideas for a Cooler Planet in Chicago, 2007 and have been traveling to worldwide venues as an educational program. http://www.coolglobes.nl/english/en-globes.html
Eco Heroes highlights individuals that have made an environmental impact in the world and features portraits of those individuals that have inspired others. Environmentalist Wangari Maathai planted trees far and wide across Kenya and formed the Green Belt Movement, ultimately winning the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize. Wangari Maathai remarked that her work was “not simply about planting trees. It was about inspiring people to take charge of their environment, the system that governed them, their lives and their future.”
Another Eco-Hero, Sister Dorothy Stang, dedicated her life to preserving the Amazonian rainforest and the people who farmed there. An American-born, Brazilian sister of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur order, Sister Dorothy was slain by local loggers and land owners in February, 2005 for her outspoken efforts on behalf of the poor and the environment.
Other featured Eco- Heroes include Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and Wendy Abrams. Mr. Kennedy has earned a reputation as “a resolute defender of the environment.” He was named one of Time magazine’s “Heroes of the Planet” for his success in helping Riverkeeper lead the fight to restore the Hudson River. This achievement helped evolve over 185 Waterkeeper organizations throughout the world.
Wendy Abrams has been tireless in her global efforts to educate the public about climate change. As founder of Cool Globes: Hot Ideas for a Cooler Planet, Ms. Abrams successfully harnessed creativity to spark dialogue regarding our responsibilities to one another and to our planet.
Also included in the exhibition is a collaborative globe, Preserving Our Rainforests, created by myself, Sandra Bacon and Ann Bingham-Freeman. This particular globe was originally created in 2009 for the Cool Globes exhibition in Exposition Park, Los Angeles. Cool Globes Los Angeles ABC7
