Cool Globes Comes to Los Angeles
Apr 26th, 2009 by andreaharris
It was an exciting experience to create another “Cool Globe” for the exhibition that opened Earth Day in the Rose Garden of Exposition Park, Los Angeles!
This particular very “cool” globe was a collaboration with fellow artist-friends, Sandie Bacon and Ann Bingham-Freeman. Sandie and I traveled to Ann’s studio, located in Yucaipa, CA, this past February to create the globe.
“Preserving Our Rainforests and Ecosystems” is sponsored by the Environmental Defense Fund and focuses on the six remaining rainforests/ ecosystems left in the world. Rainforests are the Earth’s oldest living ecosystems– and while they cover approximately 6 percent of the Earth’s surface, rainforests contain more than half the world’s plant and animal species.
Our globe focused on the rainforests and the animals found in the ecosystems. Ann’s sculptural animals, Sandie’s vivid wildlife, and my mysterious forests together with charts of the forest levels teach about the need to protect these habitats from losing biodiversity, and from deforestation.
The Earth Day celebration included the unveiling of six new “Cool Globes” in addition to approximately fifty others that have been traveling on an educational tour since debuting in Chicago 2007. Other “Cool Globe” cities include Washington, D.C., San Francisco and San Diego. After the tour in Los Angeles, the globes will move to Houston in September 2009.
Our globe was selected to be unveiled by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and activist/ producer, Laurie David.
